Brownlow medallist Mitchell revealed how he held his golden retriever in his arms as she died in a park in Melbourne.

‘Nala (Mitchell’s other golden retriever) and I are heartbroken after a freak accident at the park.

‘Grateful to hold her for her last 10 seconds before she passed in my arms.’

Mitchell added that his new Collingwood teammates tried to help during the ordeal, but there was nothing that could be done as he watched Macy die.

‘Big thanks to (ruckman) Darcy Cameron and (former Port Adelaide and Adelaide player) Billy Frampton for helping me try and save her,’ he wrote.

Mitchell later thanked his fans for their support in a post on his Stories, saying that Nala has been ‘noticeably effected’ by the loss.

‘Thanks to everyone for their messages of support the last few days it means a lot,’ he added. ‘The trauma of what happened will be there for a while.

‘Nala is noticeably effected. She cries at night and keeps looking around the house for Macy during the day if anyone has experienced this with a dog before.

‘This is what Macy would be doing right now if she was still with us.’

RSPCA Victoria said: ‘Tom, we are so sorry and saddened to hear of your loss.

‘Macy couldn’t have been matched with a better human and doggo sibling.

‘Thinking of Macy, yourself and Nala during this time.’
