One of Australia’s most senior police officers has been stood down pending an internal investigation.

‘The Australian Federal Police can confirm a senior executive officer is currently on leave pending a professional standards investigation,’ a spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia on Thursday.

‘As the matter is ongoing it is not appropriate to comment further.’

The AFP did not name the senior executive officer, but multiple outlets including 7 News believe it is deputy commissioner Ramzi Jabbour. 

Mr Jabbour has worked with the Australian Federal Police for three decades and was sworn in as deputy commissioner in September 2015 for a five-year term. 

He is most well known for being embroiled in the Mohamed Haneef scandal that saw the man wrongfully detained and charged for suspected terror links in 2007, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.
