Airlines set to cancel flights as wild thunderstorms, heavy rain and winds of up to 90km/h lash Sydney this afternoon

Flights out of Sydney could be cancelled due to thunderstorms set to hit the east coast on Wednesday afternoon.

Airlines have warned customers they could be affected by delays caused by hail, wild wind gusts of up to 90km/h and heavy rain.

‘Our team of expert meteorologists has let us know thunderstorms are forecast around Sydney which may impact your flight,’ Virgin emailed passengers.

‘We know changes to flights can be frustrating but safety comes first and we’re doing everything we can to have you on your way as soon as it is safe to do so.’

There is a 50 per cent chance of showers and ‘gusty thunderstorms’ in Sydney on Wednesday afternoon and evening. 

A severe weather warning has been issued for the state’s east, with vigorous winds expected as a southerly change moves up the coast this evening.

The coastal fringe between Jervis Bay and the Central Coast is expected to see the strongest wind gusts.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Jordan Notara told Daily Mail Australia the thunderstorm will start in southwest Sydney from around two o’clock onward.

‘Storms will most likely be hitting the city and airport from 3pm,’ he said.

‘The Illawarra and Central Tablelands currently have storms that will be moving to Sydney this afternoon.’

Mr Notara urged Sydney residents to keep an eye out for damaging wind warnings  later this afternoon.

‘We have a severe weather warning for a southerly wind change moving through Sydney at 8pm,’ he said.

‘It will be a sharp shift from westerly winds to a strong southerly wind. These winds will potentially see an average of 60km/h.’

He predicted Wednesday night’s gusts will be a ‘sharp couple of hours,’ before dying off.

‘It will be fast moving through before going north to the Hunter in the later part of the evening,’ he said.
