Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars has spoken of his pride at German giants Bayern Munich weighing up a move to take manager Erik ten Hag to the Bundesliga.

Rather than shy away from the speculation of Bayern wanting Ten Hag, Overmars has embraced the information and used it as a source of pride that his manager is performing at the highest level.

Ten Hag has caught attention across Europe, after making Ajax a serious force in the Champions League despite a vastly inferior budget.

‘You always have to be realistic. If you have such big clubs, how often do you get such a chance? We’ll always watch this,’ Overmars Fox Sports. 

‘I’m pleased about an interest from Bayern. The more clubs show interest, the better he does his job. That’s a good sign.’

The Ajax sporting director has however also reiterated how Ten Hag had extended his contract with the Eredivisie club last summer, running until 2022.

Any potential future move would see an emotional return for Ten Hag, who coached Bayern’s second team from 2013 to 2015.

He has held his post as Ajax boss since 2017 and guided the club to the Champions League semi-finals last season, against the odds.

Making a personal response to Overmars’ statement, Ten Hag said: ‘I think Overmars wants to keep me. We are busy here with something great and will continue to work on it.’
