Al Roker’s awkward on-air moment with Lenny Kravitz after Today host mocks singer’s guitarist

Al Roker was scolded by Lenny Kravitz on the Today show on Thursday morning after he mocked the appearance of the singer’s guitarist live on air in a rather awkward moment.

Lenny, 60, was performing live with his band on the Today Plaza and chatted with Al, 70, and cohosts Craig Melvin, Sheinelle Jones, and Dylan Dreyer in between songs, but he wasn’t overly impressed with one of the weather presenter’s comments.

When Craig, 45, took the time to thanks Lenny’s band, Al joked: ‘And you’ve got Howard Stern playing guitar,’ referring to the musician’s striking resemblance to the controversial radio show host.

Al’s cohosts laughed awkwardly and Lenny was heard saying: ‘Ehhhhhhhh,’ as Al walked over to the musician and asked: ‘What’s your name real quick?’ but he remained silent and simply responded by strumming his guitar.

‘That was good!’ Sheinelle commented before the show cut to Carson Daly, who was keen to discuss the 2024 MTV VMAs, but not before he mocked his cohost and said: ‘Al, you are off to a great start this morning, you had me at Friday, now the guitar player hates you….’

Carson, 51, was referring to another blunder Al made earlier on in the show when he accidentally said it was Friday instead of Thursday.

When his cohosts corrected him, Al shouted: ‘Well it feels like Friday! Lenny Kravitz makes it feel like the weekend everyday!’

Lenny and Al are actually related by blood as the TV host was a second cousin of Lenny’s mother Roxie Roker, who sadly passed away in December 1995.

Earlier on in the show, Lenny admitted it felt ‘great’ to be back on the Today Plaza and said: ‘I grew up in New York City, my parents worked at Rockefeller Center where they met at NBC, so I grew up around all of these buildings and in this great city so it’s always wonderful to be here.’

Savannah Guthrie replied: ‘So can we all say that we’re family now?’ before adding: ‘I know you’ve got cousin Al,’ referring to their family ties.

Lenny also revealed how special it was for him to be back at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday evening because he once attended the annual event with his mother before her death.

‘As I said when I was there, 31 years before when I won for Best Male Video, my mother was with me and that’s the last award show – and the first award show – that she was ever at before she passed, so it really meant a lot to me last night and I dedicated that to my mother,’ he said as the crowd cheered.

The father-of-one took to the stage at New York’s UBS Arena to perform live and later accepted the award for Best Rock Video for his track Human, and honored his late mom.

‘Wow, this is incredible, I am so grateful,’ the Fly Away hitmaker said.

‘Thirty-one years ago, my mother was with me at an award show, was at the VMAs, so I dedicate this to her.’

‘I thank God for this journey, this incredible journey. I thank Jesus for life, ‘ he added.

Roxie was an actress best known for playing the role of Helen Willis on The Jeffersons, and also appeared on TV shows including All in the Family, Fantasy Island, A Different World, 227 and Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper.
