Alabama player who tried to punch coach transfers to TSU

Mekhi Brown, a linebacker on the University of Alabama football team, has transferred to Tennessee State University, it was reported on Tuesday

A linebacker on the University of Alabama’s college football team has transferred to another school after he attempted to punch an assistant coach during last week’s national title game, it was reported on Tuesday.

Mekhi Brown, a 6ft5in, 240-pound sophomore, has enrolled at Tennessee State University, according to The Tennessean.

Brown applied to TSU in the fall – more than a month before his team went on to defeat Georgia in the national championship game in Atlanta last Monday.

During the third quarter of the game, Brown committed a personal foul penalty when he punched Georgia’s Wyatt Payne during a play.

That penalty earned him a rebuke from his head coach, Nick Saban.

It appeared Brown was also being reprimanded by other staff members on the sidelines.

As Brown went to the sidlines, he is seen lunging for a Crimson Tide staff member.

Yahoo! Sports identified the staff member as director of player personnel Kerry Stevenson.

Brown had to be restrained by teammates. After cooling off, he re-entered the game.

If he meets those stipulations, he will be permitted to take part in spring practice and then be eligible to play beginning this coming fall.

He has two years of college eligibility remaining.

Brown has already moved into his dorm room on the TSU campus in Nashville and has begun attending classes.

After the altercation with Alabama assistant coach, Brown apologized to his teammates and coaches in the Crimson Tide locker room following the game.

‘I really felt like a jerk,’ he told Yahoo Sports.

‘That’s not how I am. I wanted to win, that’s what it was. I did something stupid. I could have cost us the game.’

Alabama went on to defeat Georgia in overtime, 26-23, on a long touchdown pass.
