Alarming moment a Chinese cargo 747 aborts landing at a rainy O’Hare International after going OFF the runway onto grass

  • Footage from around 3pm on June 21 shows the plane making a steady descent
  • After touching the ground the 747 cargo plane suddenly returns back into the air
  • Pilot missed runway and ended up on the grass, forcing landing to be aborted

This is the alarming moment a Chinese cargo plane was forced to abort a landing at a rainy Chicago O’Hare International after going off the runway and tearing up the grass.

Footage taken from near the terminal building around 3pm UTC on June 21 shows the Boeing 747 making a steady descent, before suddenly bouncing back into the air after the initial touchdown.

Closer inspection showed the China Airlines plane had missed runway 10L and ended up on the grass, forcing its pilot to return to the air, where there was a visibility of three miles.

Flight CI5148, which had four crew and had flown from Anchorage in Alaska, immediately told airport authorities it had been forced to turn round due to the accident, the Aviation Herald reported.

‘We have gone wrong and turned round due to a lack of visibility on the runway,’ one of the Chinese crew told the control tower over a radio, before they discussed where the aircraft could land.

Another plane on the ground informed the control tower that the runway had been damaged, and it was closed for 50 minutes while crews removed debris and repaired a single wrecked windsock.
