Alaves coach Luis Zubeldia has become the first manager to be sacked this season in La Liga.

The former Argentine player was fired by Alaves on Sunday after a 3-0 home loss to Villarreal, the club’s fourth straight defeat that left them in last place with no goals scored.

The club released a statement on Sunday, which read: ‘Deportivo Alaves has decided to part company with Luis Zubeldia following a run of poor results at the beginning of the 2017-18 season.

‘At the moment, Javier Cabello will be in charge of leading the workforce. We thank Luis for the work done during this period and wish him the best of luck in his future career.

Cabello takes over as interim manager, with the search for a permanent appointment underway.

Zubeldia was hired in June to replace Mauricio Pellegrino, who left the club after guiding them to the final of the Copa del Rey last season, where they lost to Barcelona.

The 36-year-old had previously coached several clubs in Latin America, including most recently Colombia side Independiente Medellin.

Zubeldia follows former Crystal Palace manager Frank de Boer in being dismissed after just four games in charge, with Alaves also without a goal from their four defeats.

The side began the season with a 1-0 loss at Leganes before Barcelona won 2-0 at the Mendizorrotza.

Celta Vigo overcame them 1-0 the following week, and the 3-0 reverse at home to Villarreal proved the final straw.
