The 25-year-old has fought hard to regain the trust of his manager and was clearly devastated to be forced off.

Philippe Coutinho consoled the Spaniard as he wiped off tears with his shirt, hobbling to sidelines to warm applause at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp shed some light on the situation after full time.

He said: ‘That was the shadow of the night. It was a strange situation, he’s a tough guy.

‘If he can’t continue the game you should consider if it is something serious but in treatment room he was a little bit more positive.

‘Maybe we are lucky and it’s not too serious, we’ll see. We need all the boys for the next few weeks but especially for the game on Sunday.’

And the Liverpool boss was heartened by his team’s swashbuckling display ahead of Everton’s visit on Sunday.

‘We showed that we learned from the mistakes we made in Sevilla – now we have to show we have learned from the mistakes after Maribor when we faced Tottenham.

‘We will be ready again on Sunday and if the crowd is ready to help us it would be nice again,’ he concluded.
