Aldi recalls four types of cream cheese over deadly salmonella risk in 28 states – is your area affected?

Budget supermarket chain Aldi is recalling four brands of cream cheese because they’ve been contaminated with salmonella, a bacteria that causes deadly food poisoning.

The products, only available at Aldi, were on sale in 28 states across the US and include Happy Farms Whipped Cream Cheese Spread, Chive & Onion Cream Cheese spread, Cream Cheese Spread and Strawberry Cream Cheese Spread.

The brand manufacturer, Schreiber Foods, recommends throwing out these products immediately or returning it to the store for a refund.

Salmonella is the most common type of food poisoning in the US, causing 1.35 million infections every year.

It can cause fever, stomach cramps, vomiting and nausea, according to Cleveland Clinic.

Most people recover from the infection without needing treatment, but in severe cases, the diarrhea may cause dehydration and require medical attention.

About 26,500 Americans head to the hospital for this disease, and 420 of those end up passing away each year.

If you’re immunocompromised or elderly, you’re particularly at risk for developing severe complications from salmonella, and should seek medical care if you’ve been exposed to the bacteria.
