Alec Baldwin defends Woody Allen as others denounce him

Alec Baldwin has shared his support of controversial director Woody Allen, as three stars who worked with him on his film ‘A Rainy Day in New York,’ are donating their paychecks.

On Tuesday Baldwin, 59, shared on Twitter his thoughts about actors speaking out about allegations that Allen molested his adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow. The ’30 Rock’ actor wrote ‘Woody Allen was investigated forensically by two states (NY and CT) and no charges were filed.’

The outspoken actor said that while ‘The renunciation of him and his work, no doubt, has some purpose,’ he added ‘it’s unfair and sad to me. I worked w WA 3 times and it was one of the privileges of my career.’

Baldwin continued to ponder his thoughts on the issue over social media, questioning ‘Is it possible to support survivors of pedophilia and sexual assault/abuse and also believe that WA is innocent? I think so.’

‘The intention is not to dismiss or ignore such complaints. But accusing ppl of such crimes should be treated carefully. On behalf of the victims, as well.’

Dylan has long accused Allen, now 82, of sexually abusing her when she was a child.

She claims it began when she was around seven, after he and her adoptive mother Mia Farrow had split up.

In light of the MeToo movement, the allegations have again been brought back to the surface. Three stars who worked with Allen on the 2018 release have pledged to give up their paychecks.

Timothée Chalamet says he does not wish to profit from the 2018 Woody Allen film, A Rainy Day In New York, and is donating his salary to charity.

Ronan Farrow, Dylan’s brother who penned an explosive New Yorker article revealing Harvey Weinstein’s history of alleged sexual misconduct, is Allen and Farrow’s only biological child.

Farrow had another adopted daughter – Soon Yi. Allen left her for Soon Yi in 1992, when she was 21. They remain married to this day.

An investigation was launched into the molestation claims brought forth by Dylan the 90s but the case was dropped.

Chalamet, English actress Rebecca Hall, and Griffin Newman have donated their salaries from the 2018 release to a variety of charities including RAINN, TimesUp, and The LGBT Center in New York.

Chalamet, 22, announced in a statement on Tuesday that he was giving his salary back to charity, after condemning the director, 82, over historic allegations made about sexual harassment and molestation.

‘But I am learning that a good role isn’t the only criteria for accepting a job —that has become much clearer to me in the past few months, having witnessed the birth of a powerful movement intent on ending injustice, inequality and above all, silence.’

Timothee has chosen to split his properties between three charities: TIME’S UP, The LGBT Center in New York, and RAINN (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network).

He went on to say: ‘I don’t want to profit from my work on the film, and to that end, I am going to donate my entire salary.’

TIMOTHEE’S STATEMENT IN FULL

This year has changed the way I see and feel about so many things; it has been a thrilling and, at times, enlightening education.

I have, to this point, chosen projects from the perspective of a young actor trying to walk in the footsteps of more seasoned actors I admire.

But I am learning that a good role isn’t the only criteria for accepting a job —that has become much clearer to me in the past few months, having witnessed the birth of a powerful movement intent on ending injustice, inequality and above all, silence.

I have been asked in a few recent interviews about my decision to work on a film with Woody Allen last summer.

I’m not able to answer the question directly because of contractual obligations. But what I can say is this: I don’t want to profit from my work on the film, and to that end, I am going to donate my entire salary to three charities: TIME’S UP, The LGBT Center in New York, and RAINN (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network).

I want to be worthy of standing shoulder to shoulder with the brave artists who are fighting for all people to be treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.’

The statement concluded: ‘I want to be worthy of standing shoulder to shoulder with the brave artists who are fighting for all people to be treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.’

The move comes in response to criticism of Hollywood hypocrisy from his adopted daughter Dylan, who alleges that ‘the director sexually molested her when she was seven.’

At the weekend, Hall also gave back the salary she earned from A Rainy Day in New York.

She confirmed in a statement that she would not work with the director again and said she too was donating the money to the newly-formed Time’s Up coalition.

The campaign was formed by entertainers in the wake of dozens of high-powered men in show business facing accusations of sexual assault, harassment and misconduct.

Newman was one of the first to admit he regretted his part in the film, last October.

Before the film had even gained an official title, he announced on Twitter that he believed Woody was guilty of child sexual abuse allegations.

He subsequently donated his entire salary to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN).

Timothee, Rebecca and Griffin worked alongside US musician Selena Gomez, who in December said she was unsure how to respond to the Woody Allen allegations.

‘To be honest, I’m not sure how to answer,’ she told Billboard. ‘Not because I’m trying to back away from it.

‘[The Harvey Weinstein allegations] actually happened right after I had started [on the movie]. They popped up in the midst of it.

‘And that’s something, yes, I had to face and discuss. I stepped back and thought, “Wow, the universe works in interesting ways.”‘

The film also stars Jude Law, Elle Fanning, Diego Luna, Liev Schreiber, Cherry Jones, Will Rogers, Kelly Rohrbach and Suki Waterhouse.

No more: Griffin Newman (left), was another star of A Rainy Day In New York to donate his profits, while David Krumholtz (right) said working with Wood Allen in Wonder Wheel in 2017 was one of his deepest regrets

Earlier this month, David Krumholtz condemned his part in the making of Woody Allen film Wonder Wheel.

‘I deeply regret working with Woody Allen on Wonder Wheel,’ he said. ‘It’s one of my most heartbreaking mistakes.’

He added: ‘We can no longer let these men represent us in entertainment, politics, or any other realm. They are beneath real men.’

And on whether he would donate his profits, the actor replied by saying: ‘What residuals? Barely got paid. Woody doesn’t pay.’

Greta Gerwig also publicly declared that she ‘will not work’ for controversial director Woody Allen again during an interview with the New York Times.

Greta admitted she’s taken her time to gather her thoughts regarding the problematic director.

‘I would like to speak specifically to the Woody Allen question, which I have been asked about a couple of times recently, as I worked for him on a film that came out in 2012,’ she said.

Gerwig portrayed the character Sally in Allen’s To Rome With Love, which included performances by Penelope Cruz, Ellen Page, Alec Baldwin and Jesse Eisenberg.

‘It is something that I take very seriously and have been thinking deeply about, and it has taken me time to gather my thoughts and say what I mean to say,’ she shared in the conversation. ‘I can only speak for myself and what I’ve come to is this: If I had known then what I know now, I would not have acted in the film.

‘I have not worked for him again, and I will not work for him again.’
