- De Minaur and Boulter are both using charm in Melbourne
- Aussie said each of them carry the ‘magical’ item on court
- World No.10 beat Matteo Arnaldi in straight sets on Wednesday
Australian tennis star Alex de Minaur has opened up about the lucky charm he and girlfriend Katie Boulter are sharing at the Australian Open this year.
De Minaur is Australia’s best hope of going deep at the major and he took another step on that journey when he cruised past Italian Matteo Arnaldi in straight sets on Wednesday.
Boulter stayed on course for a potential third-round meeting with Emma Raducanu after making it through her opener at the Australian Open by putting away China’s world No 73 Yue Yuan 7-5 7-6.
The power couple, who have been described as ‘the Kate and Wills of the Australian tennis season’, are in great form and the pair believe some of that is down to a small teddy bear that brings them luck.
When asked to explain what was so special about the soft toy, de Minaur seemed confused by the powers of the lucky charm.
De Minaur has revealed that he and Boulter are sharing a lucky charm at the Australian Open
‘I don’t know what’s happening,’ he told Channel Nine on Wednesday.
‘It’s this magical fluffy teddy bear. I don’t know what it is.’
The Aussie said the couple have been fortune they’ve been playing on separate days, so they can both share the soft toy’s mysterious effect.
‘As soon as I get back to the hotel, I give it to Katie. It’s her turn to use the magical powers of the teddy bear,’ he explained.
Asked if the bear has a name, de Minaur shook his head.
‘No, it doesn’t have a name. It’s just magical, that’s all,’ he said.
‘As long as it keeps getting me wins on the tennis court, I don’t care what it’s name is.’
De Minaur and Boulter met on the tournament circuit, initially keeping things casual until a coffee date three years ago changed everything.

The Aussie was stopped in his tracks before the tournament when he was asked if he was going to take his relationship with Boulter to the next level.
Comedian Ash Williams, affiliated with The ATP Podcast, put the big question to de Minaur at a press conference.
He asked: ‘Will we get a proposal to Katie after the AO [Australian Open]?’
‘Jeez. Putting me on the spot here,’ de Minaur replied.
‘Yeah, it’s not on the cards just yet. Not ruling it out. For the time being, I’m going to try to focus on playing tennis and then we’ll think about the off-court activities.’
Williams persisted, asking: ‘If you win the AO?’
‘It wouldn’t be a bad way to celebrate, let’s just say that,’ replied de Minaur.
