‘Not many teams dominate at the Nou Camp… we’ve got belief that this can be a special night’: Trent Alexander-Arnold confident that Liverpool can upset the odds against Barcelona

  • Trent Alexander-Arnold has called on Reds players to create history in return tie
  • He says that ‘not many teams dominate at the Nou Camp’ and they have belief

Trent Alexander-Arnold has called on Liverpool’s players to create another special European night at Anfield when they attempt to overturn a 3-0 deficit against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final.

Jurgen Klopp’s side impressed at the Nou Camp last week in spite of the full-time result, and Alexander-Arnold – who watched on from the bench – believes that bodes well looking ahead to Tuesday night’s match.

‘Obviously we were massively disappointed with the result [in Barcelona] but in terms of the performance I think it was maybe one of the best in the season so far,’ he said at a press conference on Monday.

‘It was a strange one because we’ve obviously not had many of those results recently, we were on a decent win streak. I’m sure Barcelona will come here tomorrow with respect for us.

‘The stats from the game really paint a picture, not many teams can go and really dominate at the Nou Camp. It’s one of those where you get punished against the top teams and the top players.

‘We never took our chances on the night and hopefully if we get the same types of chances tomorrow we’ll be able to put them away and punish them.’

Alexander-Arnold is expected to start in the second leg, and the young full-back insists that the players still believe they can turn around the tie.

‘I think we’ve obviously had decent results this season where we’ve scored more than three goals,’ he continued. ‘Being at home obviously helps us, we’ve got the fans behind us, and I think there’s still that sense of belief.

‘We know it’s going to be really hard, it’s not going to be a walk in the park, but everyone’s just got to be realistic. We’ve got that belief in the changing rooms that anything’s possible. Hopefully we can create another special night.’

Liverpool will be without two of their main attacking threats in Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, giving an opportunity for the likes of Divock Origi to come in and prove their worth.

Alexander-Arnold, who himself is in double figures for assists this season, believes Liverpool’s less regular players will have a great opportunity to write themselves into the club’s history books.

‘Obviously you’ve got two of our main goalscorers off, but it also presents an opportunity for some of the other lads to come in and make themselves heroes,’ he said.

‘If we do overturn the deficit, then whoever scores, their names will always be remembered because I’m sure it’ll be one of those really special nights.’
