Alexis Mac Allister was involved in a disagreement with Cristian Romero on Instagram following Tottenham’s controversial victory over Liverpool.

Tottenham won 2-1, with Joel Matip scoring a late own goal, while Liverpool ended the game with nine men following the dismissals of Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota.

Liverpool received an apology from PGMOL after the game, who admitted that Luis Diaz’s goal was wrongly ruled out for offside.

A statement from PGMOL admitted that a ‘significant human error’ had occurred when making the decision.

Following the game Romero wrote on Instagram: ‘This team has great spirit, great heart. always like this, all together.’

Mac Allister responded by suggesting that Tottenham were helped by the officials. He wrote: ‘Normal when you have 12 players.’

Romero subsequently responded: ‘Cry at home’

Mac Allister and Romero are team-mates at international level for Argentina and were part of the squad that won the World Cup last year, but they were up against each other on Saturday.

Romero played the whole game as he helped Tottenham to prevail, while Mac Allister played 80 minutes.

The statement from PGMOL regarding the decision to rule out Diaz’s goal read: ‘PGMOL acknowledge a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool.

‘The goal but Luis Diaz was disallowed for offside by the on-field team of match officials. This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, however, the VAR failed to intervene.

‘PGMOL will conduct a full review into the circumstances which led to the error.

‘PGMOL will immediately be contacting Liverpool at the conclusion of the fixture to acknowledge the error.’
