  • Man five times over the limit makes early morning fast food pit stop
  • The 35-year-old pulled into a McDonald’s drive-thru and fell asleep
  • When the police came he drove off and then allegedly blew 0.230

A man accused of drunk driving was allegedly almost five times over the legal limit when he fell asleep at the wheel at a McDonald’s drive-thru.

The 35-year-old Paralowie man was driving along Port Wakefield Rd in Adelaide’s north about 5.30 am on Thursday when he decided he wanted an early morning bite to eat.

As he turned into the Bolivar fast-food restaurant police say he drove directly through a barbed wire fence, bee-lining it to the drive-thru.

McDonald’s staff called the police after the man failed to place an order and they realized he was asleep.

When officers arrived the 35-year-old drove off before a highway patrol car pulled him into a nearby BP service station carpark.

‘Police spoke to the driver, a 35-year-old Paralowie man, who they strongly suspected of being intoxicated,’ a SA police spokesperson said.

‘He was breath-tested, allegedly returning a positive reading of 0.230 — almost five times the limit.’

His car was towed from the scene and impounded for 28 days, police say.

The 35-year-old immediately lost his license for 12 months and will appear in court at a later date on a charge of drink-driving without due care.
