Almost 800,000 homes in Britain are worth £1m or more

Britain now boasts a staggering 768,553 property millionaires after a surge in homes hitting the £1m mark. 

According to new figures, there are 768,553 homes across Britain valued at at least £1 million – accounting for 2.7% of the nation’s housing stock.

This is a jump of 22.95% or 143,476 more property millionaires since August 2016 when the data was previously analysed.

With large concentrations of property millionaires in London and the South East of England, there are more than double the number of million-pound properties in Guildford, Surrey than there are across the whole of Wales.

WHERE ARE THE PROPERTY MILLIONAIRES?  

Here are how property millionaires are clustered across Britain, according to Zoopla’s estimates:

1. London, 430,720

2. South East England, 180,397

3. East of England, 69,840

4. South West England, 33,717

5. North West England, 12,552

6. West Midlands, 12,219

7. Scotland, 11,101

8. East Midlands, 6,845

9. North East England, 4,835

10. Yorkshire and the Humber, 4,103

More than half of the nation’s property millionaires are in London – which accounts for 430,720 of the total. 

In the south-west London postcode SW6 which includes Fulham, some 14,020 properties exceed £1 million. 

In the exclusive north-west London enclave NW3 – which includes Hampstead and Primrose Hill – there are 12,500.

And in N1, which comprises Islington, there are 11,301 homes valued at more than £1 million.

Guildford was identified as the top million-pound property hotspot outside London, with 5,889 homes there valued at £1 million-plus, according to new data from the website Zoopla.

High concentrations of million-pound homes also include Cambridge, Reading, Oxford, St Albans, Bristol and Edinburgh. 

Wales was found to have 2,223 homes worth £1 million or more.

Meanwhile property data at the end of last year showed that, somewhat unsurprisingly, the top 10 richest streets in Britain were all in London.

Kensington Palace Gardens, which borders the west side of Hyde Park, remains at the top of the tables, with average property values sitting at an astronomical £35,696,711.

Residents of the street include Formula One heiress Tamara Ecclestone, the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, and Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovich. 

TOWNS WITH THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF MILLION POUND PROPERTIES 

The top 10 post towns excluding London with the highest numbers of million pound properties:

4. Sevenoaks, 5,416

LONDON BOROUGHS WITH THE MOST PROPERTIES VALUED AT £1 MILLION 

These are the London boroughs with the most properties valued at £1 million-plus:

1. Westminster, 54,231

2. Kensington and Chelsea, 45,366

3. Camden, 37,908

4. Wandsworth, 30,686

5. Hammersmith and Fulham, 30,019

6. Barnet, 24,719

7. Richmond-upon-Thames, 23,322

8. Islington, 22,973

9. Lambeth, 17,701

In second place was Grosvenor Crescent – a stone’s throw from Buckingham Palace – where the average address is worth just shy of £22m. 

Third place was The Boltons near Gloucester Road Tube station, where buyers will fork out just under £20m for an average address. 

The wealthiest street outside the capital – with the giveaway name of Golf Club Road – is in Weybridge, Surrey. To buy a home here, buyers will need an average budget of just under £6m.

Temple Gardens in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, comes next, where average values stand at £4,060,609.

It narrowly beats Phillippines Shaw in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, which boasts average property values of £4,013,587.

Zoopla released the research to mark the launch of its new property calculator tool which gives home owners indications of when the value of their own property may eventually reach the £1 million mark.
