Alt-right online trolls get booted off Facebook

Facebook announced on Sunday that it took a proactive step in quashing the activity alt-right group who aimed to sabotage the audience score for the movie ‘Black Panther.’

The social media giant said that the ‘Down With Disney’s Treatment of Franchises and its Fanboys’ page was removed after the group created an event called ‘Give Black Panther a Rotten Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.’

Facebook said the alt-right online consortium called for deflating Black Panther’s movie score as revenge for the perceived slights against fans of DC films due to their low scores, according to Variety Magazine.

Rotten Tomatoes is a review aggregator site for film and television launched in 1998 and currently owned by Warner Bros.

Rotten Tomatoes also released a statement shortly after Facebook announced that it had removed the group from its platform.

‘We at Rotten Tomatoes are proud to have become a platform for passionate fans to debate and discuss entertainment and we take that responsibility seriously,’ the site said Thursday in a statement.

‘While we respect our fans’ diverse opinions, we do not condone hate speech. Our team of security, network and social experts continue to closely monitor our platforms and any users who engage in such activities will be blocked from our site and their comments removed as quickly as possible.’

The ‘Down with Disney’ group had found success earlier this year when it called on its members to manipulate the audience score for the latest Star Wars installment.

While Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie a 91 per cent ‘fresh’ rating among professional critics when it opened in December, armature viewers gave the film an unprecedented 48 per cent rating during the same time.

Before being booted off Facebook on Sunday, Variety reported that the group  posted a call to employ the tactic to distort Black Panther’s numbers.

‘Given the massive success of the audience review rigging on the Rotten Tomatoes site for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and due to the sudden rise in those disgruntled with business practices… especially due to the corporate manipulations which created falsified bad press for the DCEU, I feel that it’s time to strike back at all those under Disney and bring down the house of mouse’s actions for paying off the critics that hurt DC Comics on film and for other parties affected by them,’ the post reads.

‘I’ll be making events like this for Infinity War and the Netflix shows etc so we can rally together to truly make a difference. Share this with your friends and all potential sympathizers.’

The event had over 4,000 Facebook users who indicated they were either ‘interested’ or ‘going’ being being shutdown on Sunday.

‘Black Panther,’ which opens Feb. 16, is on pace to score a $150 million domestic debut, which would be the highest opening for a Marvel character’s first stand-alone film.
