Amadou Onana has been seen embracing a viral video that saw him correct a reporter during Euro 2024.

The midfielder arrived for Belgium duty this week for the international break, which will see his side take on Israel and France at the start of the latest edition of the Nations League.

Onana is hoping to build on a successful start to the season for himself and club side Aston Villa – his new club after moving to the midlands from Everton in a £50million deal.

He has so far scored two goals this season from midfield, helping his side to two wins and six points from their opening three Premier League matches of the season.

Villa duty, meanwhile, has come on the back of a summer with Belgium, and Onana has been re-living one particular event months on.

Arriving for Belgium duty this week, Onana was all smiles as he was snapped donning a black shirt with the words: ‘Andre is not even my name mate!’ written on it in big white font.

Also wearing a bandana around his neck, the 23-year-old was keen to show off his new clobber as the press snapped pictures of his look.

Though he sees the funny side now, he wasn’t so impressed when the viral moment occurred on June 17 on the back of his side’s defeat by Slovakia in their opening match of Euro 2024.

Performing media duties in the mixed zone after the match, Onana impressed fans with his quick change of accent, answering questions in French before swapping to English to correct the reporter.

The reporter had referred to the midfielder as ‘Andre’ rather than ‘Aamdou’, and Onana wasn’t in the mood to brush the error under the carpet.

‘Andre is not even my name, mate. Do you know what I mean?’ he said, calmly rebuking the journalist.

It appeared the reporter had confused Onana with his namesake, Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana, but they were quickly corrected.

Belgium exited Euro 2024 at the last-16 stage, losing 1-0 to France, but Onana went onto embrace the incident as he hit the ground running at Villa.

He scored a matter of minutes into his debut, heading in his side’s opener in their 2-1 win over West Ham on the opening day, and was interviewed by Sky Sports after the match.

After impressing fans with his answers, presenter Dave Jones told the midfielder that it would be unlikely that anyone would call him Andre again, with the 23-year-old breaking out into laughter.
