Newcastle United co-owner Amanda Staveley in legal spat with Greek shipping tycoon over ‘£37m loan’
Claim: Amanda Staveley owns 10% of the football club with her husband
Newcastle United co-owner Amanda Staveley has denied claims that she owes tens of millions of pounds to a Greek shipping tycoon as a bankruptcy row continues. Victor Restis has demanded £37million, saying Staveley failed to repay a loan of 15 years ago.
Staveley, who owns 10 per cent of the football club with her husband, has said the sum relates to a £10million equity investment made by Restis in 2008, and what she owes is far less than the magnate claims.
About £7million was repaid by 2016, leaving £3million, she says.
Staveley’s lawyers last month applied to the High Court to have a statutory demand issued by Restis to be ‘set aside’.
Restis said: ‘Ms Staveley’s position that the debt owed is unfounded is misconceived.’
