Fire! Amazing footage shows moment Russian tank is targeted by Ukrainian fighter armed with UK-made weapon

  • Footage shows the T-72B being hit by a British-supplied NLAW weapon
  • The missile fails to completely immobilise the tank and it is able to continue
  • However a burst of flame suggests the tank may have suffered some damage

Rumbling along a residential street in besieged Mariupol, this Russian tank is a sitting duck.

And seconds later astonishing footage shows the T-72B being hit by a British-supplied NLAW weapon.

The missile fails to completely immobilise the tank – daubed with the sinister letter Z – and it is able to continue. It is thought the missile did not travel far enough to fully arm and only skimmed its target.

However a burst of flame suggests the tank may have suffered some damage.

The Ukrainian soldier who launched the attack from a first-floor window shouts afterward ‘Glory to the Azov Battalion, bitch!’ – referring to the ultranationalist unit helping defend the city.

‘The weapon will work in urban environments but it’s harder to get good shots as all anti-tank weapons require distance to arm,’ former UK tank commander Justin Crump told The Times

. NLAWs were developed by Swedish defence firm Saab and manufactured in Britain by the French company Thales.

The UK has provide 4,000 anti-tank weapons to Ukraine.

The 12.5kg single-use weapon costs about £20,000 and has a combat range of 20m to 800m.

Britain has provided shoulder-launched NLAWs to Ukraine as part of a package of 4,000 anti-tank weapons.

Ukrainian soldiers have shouted ‘God Save the Queen!’ when firing the missiles.

About 40% of Russian tanks destroyed in the conflict have been attacked with NLAWs, it has been claimed.
