Amazon sends accidental baby email to shoppers

A technical glitch this week made Amazon customers question whether the firm knew something they didn’t.

The error caused Amazon to accidentally email customers telling them they’d received a gift on their baby registry – whether they had one or not.

Amazon has since confirmed that the email was sent out by mistake, and has apologised for any confusion caused.

A technical glitch this week caused Amazon customers to question whether the firm knew something they didn’t. The error cause Amazon to accidentally email thousands of customers telling them they’d received a gift on their baby registry – whether they had one or not

THE GLITCH

The error cause Amazon to accidentally email customers telling them they’d received a gift on their baby registry – whether they had one or not.

It is unknown how many customers have been affected.

The email displayed an image of a crawling infant and told shoppers they had received a present from their baby registry.

The email reads: ‘Hello Amazon Customer. Someone great recently purchased a gift from your baby registry!’

Amazon has now confirmed the email came from the company and that it was sent out by mistake.

The email displayed an image of a crawling baby and told shoppers they had received a present from their baby registry.

The email reads: ‘Hello Amazon Customer. Someone great recently purchased a gift from your baby registry!’

But a number of recipients reported on Twitter that they had received the email, despite the fact that they weren’t pregnant.

Danielle Gunn tweeted a screenshot of the email, along with the caption: ‘Uhhh…does Amazon know something I don’t? Who else got a random email about a baby registry gift?’

And Kailyn McGowan tweeted: ‘When you receive an email from Amazon that says someone “purchased a gift from your baby registry”‘, along with a meme of Jay Alexander.

Others, including Bloody Candy Corn and Karen Tumulty joked that their children – who are respectively three and 21, are definitely not babies.

Amazon has since confirmed the email came from the firm, but that it was sent out by mistake.

A spokesperson for Amazon said: ‘We are notifying affected customers. A technical glitch caused us to inadvertently send a gift alert e-mail earlier today.

‘We apologise for any confusion this may have caused.’

Public glitches are rare for Amazon, which prides itself on being a technology company, not simply an online retailer.

In June, some shoppers who were attempting to view product listings on Amazon were instead sent to an error message that showed the image of a dog.

Anna Norris tweeted: 'That awkward moment when Amazon says someone bought you a gift from your baby registry that you def don't have bc you're def not pregnant'

And in February, its cloud storage and computing business, Amazon Web Services, suffered a technical disruption that was felt more widely.

Clients of the service had temporary difficulties because of the human-inputted error, showing how many have come to rely on Amazon’s cloud for parts of their day-to-day operations.

Amazon has since made changes to prevent similar future incidents.
