America is no longer home to the world’s top burger.
The US is home to the biggest fast food chains – from McDonald’s to Wendy’s – and is also thought to be where they were invented.
But a chain in Europe has landed the title of the world’s best burger for 2024, according to the ‘Michelin Guide for Burgers’.
It is the first time the gong has gone to a restaurant outside of America. Well-known Pizza Loves Emily from New York had headed the list last year but slipped to number two.

The best burger is is not even Germany where many think think their ancestors invented the dish in the city of Hamburg – but Spain.
Hundred Burgers, with four restaurants in Valencia and three in Madrid, has earned the top spot in the World’s Best Burgers 2024 rankings.
The restaurant’s acclaim is attributed to its 120-day aged beef, which is described as ‘melting in your mouth,’ and its ‘super crispy’ bacon.
‘For us, receiving this recognition is the fulfilment of a lifelong dream,’ said Álex González, co-founder of Hundred Burgers, in an interview with Infobae Spain.
‘We created the company with the aim of making a burger that would be a world reference, and never in our wildest dreams did we contemplate being chosen as the best burger in the world. It is a huge honour.’
They have got there with years of research and hard work.
In 2017, González and co-founder Ezequiel Maldjian headed to New York for a four-day tour of the city’s top 15 burgers.
Initially aimed at improving burgers at González’s mother’s restaurant, the trip inspired them to open their own burger-focussed establishment.
By 2020, Hundred Burgers opened its first location and quickly won the ‘best burger in Spain’ award.
Other top contenders in the burger rankings include Au Cheval, with locations in Chicago and New York, Holy Burger in São Paulo, and Funky Chicken Food Truck in Stockholm. Burger & Beyond, from Manchester and London, narrowly missed the top five.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, a report named the best US city for pizza – and it was not a city known for the dish.
New York City and Chicago are normally up there for best pizza, and Detroit was top the previous two years.
But itwas Denver, Colorado, that can claim to be best for pizza, according to a comprehensive study that looked at EIGHT measures. See the box below for their full methodology.
In a nutshell, researchers considered typical price, the number of restaurants and how well they were rated plus a so-called ‘pizza passion’ score.
Across those, the Mile High City rose to the top across 50 of the biggest US metros researched by Clever Real Estate.
NYC did land one unwanted accolate – the most expensive pizzas in America where a large pepperoni is amost $34.
