An American expat has spoken out about a misconception the rest of the world harbours about Sydney’s weather – and how it has to change.

Sophia, who goes by @sophiainsydney now that she has moved from Los Angeles, shared a video on TikTok talking about needing to ‘rebrand’ the city.

‘We need to rebrand Sydney and showcase how cold it gets here,’ she said. ‘Because globally, especially in America, you just assume Sydney is as hot as LA, if not hotter, all year round.’

Poll

Do you think Sydney is ‘branded’ wrong?

  • Yes – it shouldn’t be known as a warm city 0 votes
  • No – Americans just assume all of Australia is hot 1 votes

Sophia went on, ‘How do people operate at this temperature? All i want to do is eat and stay in.’

She also claimed that she has religiously been wearing gloves, beanies, and puffer jackets – but nothing seems to keep her warm enough.

Thousands of people engaged with her video, and many agreed that the weather in Sydney was unusually cold this year.

‘I am certain this is the coldest I’ve ever been here,’ said one man.

‘It’s a ramen and staying in bed day everyday – but I’m not sure if this is good.’

‘It definitely feels like the coldest start to winter I’ve felt.’

A fourth added, ‘The weather is definitely quite shocking – I’ve lived in Sydney all my life and it’s never been this cold.’

Others offered architectural explanations for the lack of heat.

‘The reason why we feel the cold so much more in Sydney is because our houses are made to keep the heat out and keep cool throughout the summer.’

Another added, ‘I think a lot of people just have inadequate heating as well. My house is toasty warm and I have single glazed windows and minimum required insulation.’

‘I used to enjoy all the windows I my house has because it meant cool breeze in the summer … but now it’s just never-ending freezing gusts of wind.’

While several Americans and other foreigners shared similar qualms with the East Coast’s weather-related branding.

‘I’m from Michigan and been living in Melbourne for almost 8 years,’ said one man. ‘Winters here have me feeling like I’ve got frost bite 24/7.’

‘I was born in British Columbia in Canada and not even the cold there bites as much as June in Syndey.’

A third added, ‘Aussie winters are no joke! Unless you live in Queensland of the Northern Territories … you’re pretty much screwed.’
