Americans baffled by Aussie icon spotted on the streets of California

An American motorist have been left perplexed after an iconic Australian car was spotted driving on the streets of California.  

The iconic white Holden VE ute sent tongues wagging after it was captured at an intersection in Riverside, in southern California, on July 4. 

‘Can somebody tell me the name of this car?’ the motorist captioned the video which was shared to social media by Explore Riverside.

Amused commenters were quick to reveal the car was an iconic Australian model. 

‘Every Aussie just rolls their eyes in common lol,’ one person wrote. 

‘This is every second car here in Australia,’ a second commented. 

‘Lol every Aussie reading this. That’s an Aussie Holden ute,’ a third said. 

Holden enthusiasts gushed about the iconic Australian brand in the comments.

‘Holden ute mate, wearing my Jeans, thongs and got my VB [Victoria Bitter],’ one person wrote. 

‘Only the greatest car on planet earth,’ another person wrote. 

The last Holden Commodore rolled off the production line in Australia in 2017.

Holden’s parent company General Motors made the call to stop manufacturing the vehicles in Australia and New Zealand. 

General Motors said the move was made due to production costs and investment needed to keep the business running.

A report prepared for the federal government revealed that 805 workers at the Holden manufacturing plant in Adelaide lost their jobs.

Cameron Pascoe from Dutton Garage Wholesale in Melbourne previously said the models ‘could be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in 10 years time’.

A 2016 Holden Commodore is priced anywhere between $39,900 to $72,500 according to carsales.com.au. 

The Commodore was first introduced as part of the Holden fleet in 1978. 

Plans were made by Holden to introduce the Commodores in the US as the Pontiac G8 in 2008, but General Motors stopped production a year later.

Aussies bought 2,623 full sized pick ups between January and May this year – a 16.3 per cent increase compared to the same time last year. 

Despite the popularity of pick-up truck, utes are currently the vehicle of choice for most Aussie drivers. 

The Ford Ranger is currently the best selling vehicle in Australia with 33,531 vehicles sold in Australia between January to June this year.
