An AbFab car sale: Alfa Romeo used by Jennifer Saunders’ character in classic episode going to auction for £30k

  • Crack open the ‘Bolly’ for the car famously clamped outside Harvey Nicholls
  • 1993 Alfa Romeo Spider starred in hilarious 1990s sitcom, Absolutely Fabulous
  • With 46,326 miles on the clock, it is heading to a classic car auction in August

A sports car that featured in an episode of the much-loved sitcom Absolutely Fabulous is due to go under the hammer – and experts predict it could make £30,000.

The Alfa Romeo convertible was used by Jennifer Saunders’ character Edina in an episode where she is forced to economise and give up her chauffeur-driven car. But instead she buys the red Italian roadster as it was ‘the smallest car she could find’.

Together, Edina and best friend Patsy Stone, played by Joanna Lumley, cause carnage in the Alfa Romeo as they drunkenly drive through the streets of trendy west London to go to a supermarket.

The car ends up getting clamped when they park on the pavement directly outside Harvey Nichols in the 1994 episode.

Now, the car is on sale for a guide price of £30,000 — 30 years after the episode first aired.

At the time, the Alfa Romeo Spider was owned by a marketing agency which leant it to the BBC for filming.

It has had three previous owners since then, including the vendor who bought it in 2015.

The car, which has a 2.0-litre engine and has done just 46,000 miles, is heading to the block at Iconics Auctioneers’ Silverstone Festival sale on 24 August.

Arwel Richards, a classic car specialist at Iconics, said: ‘Very few TV comedies feature a specific car as part of the plot, they are more often used as mere props to establish a character’s image.
