2019 is drawing to a close and Liverpool supporters could be forgiven for not wanting the year to end, with Jurgen Klopp’s side having enjoyed an incredible twelve months.

Only one of those losses came in the Premier League, and that was Liverpool’s first game of 2019, when they were beaten 2-1 by Manchester City. Another of the defeats was when a shadow side lost 5-0 to Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup.

For much of the year Liverpool were unstoppable, and they scored an incredible 130 goals along the way.

A 4-0 win at home to Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Champions League, after losing the first leg 3-0, was undoubtedly one of the highlights.

Liverpool’s record in Europe during 2019 deserves much praise as they won nine out of 13 fixtures.

They have also been excellent in the Premier League, finishing one point behind winners Manchester City last season and establishing a 13-point lead so far this campaign.

Out of 37 league games in 2019, Liverpool have won 31, with Klopp’s side displaying tremendous resilience to prevail even on the occasions when they haven’t performed particularly well.

The dramatic 3-2 win against Newcastle in May, when Divock Origi scored a late winner, boosted Liverpool’s momentum at a key stage in the title race even though they were unable to stop City retaining the league.

For all the attacking qualities of the likes of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, Liverpool’s defence also deserves much praise – they have conceded just 28 goals in 37 top flight games in 2019.

Liverpool will certainly hope that they will be able to dominate to such an extent in 2020.
