Urgent recalls for imported Chevrolet and GMC utes amid fears faulty airbags could send deadly metal fragments flying

  • Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra have been recalled over faulty airbags
  • The affected utes were sold between December 1, 2006 and August 1, 2008
  • ACCC says the metal inflator in airbags could explode in an event of a collision

Local conversion specialist Victorian American Imports has issued an urgent recall for two popular utes amid fears over faulty front passenger side Takata airbag.

The Traralgon-based company, which is located about 160km from Melbourne’s CBD, recalled the 2007-2008 models of Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra on Wednesday.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said the metal inflator in airbags could explode in an event of a collision.

‘A combination of high temperatures and humidity can cause the airbag inflator propellant to degrade,’ a statement read.

‘If an affected vehicle is involved in a collision triggering the airbag, the metal inflator housing may explode or rupture under too much internal pressure.

The recalled cars were sold between December 1, 2006 and August 1, 2008 in Australia.

Customers can enter their VIN details to check whether the vehicle has been recalled.

They are advised to contact Victorian American Imports on 03 5176 0600 or email them at admin@victorianamericanimports.com to arrange for a replacement airbag inflator free of charge.
