And Just Like That… subtly archives Carrie’s most iconic (and divisive!) looks

While Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes, Charlotte York and Samantha Jones are the lead characters throughout Sex And The City – the fifth main star of the show is undoubtedly Carrie’s iconic wardrobe.

Since hitting screens in 1998, the show ran for 94 episodes across six seasons up until 2004, returned for two movies in 2008 and 2010, and has made a comeback with its reboot And Just Like That… last year – with Carrie’s clothes as widely-discussed, debated, adored and deplored as all those years ago.

In the eight episode of And Just Like That…, named Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered, in between full-frontal nudity, divorce talks and steamy sexual favours, fans see Carrie packing her clothes to go into storage – with eagle-eyed fans enjoying a walk down memory lane with a series of her iconic ensembles.

From her incredible Versace Couture Mille Feuille gown, worn in the final ever episode of the series, to a less-than flattering poncho from Series Two and the dirndl that got so many talking, superfans are given a glimpse of snippets of history from one of the TV world’s most widely-discussed wardrobes.

Amazing: While Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes, Charlotte York and Samantha Jones are the lead characters throughout Sex And The City – the fifth main star of the show is undoubtedly Carrie’s iconic wardrobe, and this week’s episode of And Just Like That… takes a look at some of her old looks

Hmm... Carrie - and behind the scenes, costume designer Patricia Field - caused quite the stir when Carrie's kooky ensembles were taken to dizzying new heights in 1999's Season Two, when she sported a dirndl for a Central Park picnic with the girls

THE DIRNDEL: SEASON TWO

In an early episode eight scene, Carrie welcomes her real estate pal Seema Patel, played by Sarita Choudhury, into her home, where eagle-eyed fans will spot Carrie clutching an iconic piece of SATC history.

Carrie – and behind the scenes Patricia Field – caused quite the stir when Carrie’s kooky ensembles were taken to dizzying new heights in 1999’s Season Two, when she sported a dirndl for a Central Park picnic with the girls.

The outfit has long-divided fans, landing on both the worst and best dressed compilations over the past 23 years.

Seasons two to four assistant costume designer Eric Daman previously discussed the outfit decision.

He said: ‘It was an iconic moment of vintage fashion. “Why is she wearing a dirndl?” It doesn’t really matter because it’s just this great Heidi picnic, Carrie-fashion-moment. It was an “ah ha!” moment for myself and the world: You can just be whomever you want to be and it doesn’t always have to be a Lacroix dress.’

Patricia meanwhile said in 1999: ‘The straight types just don’t get the irony. We had to say to the guys, “Look, the girls in this show just aren’t going to wear miniskirts with high heels. No one in New York dresses like that. Period.”

When Carrie moves to Paris to be with Aleksandr Petrovsky, she naturally brings a series of sensational ensembles, with the most breathtaking undoubtedly being the dreamy Versace gown.

It was later revealed that the dress cost an eye-popping $80k.

She explains to Seema that she has worn the dress twice, once in Paris and once in her apartment. She said of the gown: ‘Versace…

‘I’ve only worn her twice, once in Paris and once in here just for fun. I sat in here at that window and ate a whole thing of Jiffy Puffs.’

The episode wraps with Carrie sitting in her window, wearing the gown and eating treats.

Speaking about the dress when the original series wrapped, Patricia said: ‘Some people make these crocheted doily gowns that they put on dolls and it goes over a toilet-paper roll.

‘They crochet this gown for a doll and the gown is really big, and then you just put the doll over the toilet-paper roll and it sits in their bathroom…

‘I always found that hysterical. That’s what that gown meant to me. When we shot [the next-to-last episode], Carrie was waiting for Aleksandr to come to her hotel room in Paris, and in the end he showed up very late. That gown is huge. I set that gown over the bed, and it literally covered the bed. It was the perfect princess moment.’

In 1999’s Season Two, Episode Four, entitled They Shoot Single People, Don’t They?, Carrie pulls an all-nighter in the club with her pals before arriving late to a shoot for New York Magazine.

The episode is memorable, as Carrie’s bedraggled appearance means the magazine tagline changes from: ‘Single And Fabulous!’, to ‘Single and Fabulous?’ – much to Carrie’s dismay.

In 2010, Sarah Jessica Parker was named chief creative officer for Halston Heritage, however the collaboration was short-lived as she departed three years later and alleged the brand never paid her.

Prior to this however, the brand got some Sex And The City airtime, as Carrie was seen donning a duo of dazzling tiered dress by the brand in 2010’s second movie adaptation of the show.

Carrie sported both a dazzling blue mini layered dress and later during their trip to the Middle East, an orange, maxi version of the look – both of which get a glimpse in the latest episode.
