Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana gave a very non-committal answer this week when asked about his future at Old Trafford.

Onana has started 72 Premier League games for United since signing from Inter Milan in July 2023.

The 29-year-old has made 239 saves in those matches, keeping 18 clean sheets, but he has also produced multiple high-profile errors.

Having finished 15th in the Premier League last season — the club’s lowest final position in the top flight since 1974 — significant changes are expected at United this summer as manager Ruben Amorim aims to fine tune his squad.

Onana is rumoured to have attracted interest from Saudi Arabia but it is understood that no deal is currently close.

The former Inter and Ajax stopper is currently on holiday but he was stopped for a quick chat by reporter Stephane Bassalia Ouattara this week.

But the Cameroonian was asked this week if he could be leaving Old Trafford this summer

When quizzed about whether he might be departing United this summer, a smiling Onana replied in French: ‘Will I leave? I don’t know, we’ll see!’

Onana faced more criticism than many of his United team-mates last season but club legend and former goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar believes that Amorim should stick with his current No 1.

Speaking to talkSPORT this week, Van der Sar said: ‘He has great strengths. He’s athletic.

‘He has good reaction saves. Good with his feet and everything. I’m sure he’s going to get over it.

‘Sometimes it’s not easy. Sometimes your performances or the pressure there is.

‘But I’ve seen him play for Ajax, for Inter, Champions League finals. I’m sure he’s going to be fine for next season.

‘I think there are more areas where United should see if you can have a better player, a different player.

‘But I don’t think the goalkeeping situation needs to be addressed now.’

But Edwin van der Sar, pictured at last month’s Europa League final, thinks Onana should stay

When asked if some of the criticism of Onana had been unfair, Van der Sar added: ‘If you make a mistake or drop one through your legs or it’s a wrong ball that you put out from the back, then you can blame the goalkeeper.

‘He’s not been consistent in his performances this year. But with the qualities that he has, he should be able to play for Man United for next season.’

The only other goalkeeper to play for United’s first team last season was Turkey international Altay Bayindir.

Bayindir featured in 10 matches, keeping clean sheets against Barnsley, FCSB and Aston Villa, while also conceding four goals on three occasions — in high-scoring defeats by Tottenham, Newcastle and Brentford.
