  • Meanwhile, dad Andrew Flintoff turned down the chance to be part of the England dressing-room for next month’s white-ball series against Australia

Rocky Flintoff scored 32 in his maiden first-class innings for Lancashire against Surrey as he became the 10th-youngest debutant in county championship history.

On the day he collected his GCSE results, Flintoff – aged 16 years 137 days – fell to a brilliant diving catch by Indian overseas pro Sai Sudharshan at backward point from Jordan Clark’s first ball after lunch, as Lancashire were dismissed for 204 by the defending champions.

Meanwhile, Andrew Flintoff – Rocky’s father – has turned down the chance to be part of the dressing-room for England’s white-ball series against Australia next month.

He recently coached Northern Superchargers in The Hundred, and will continue to be involved in the set-up with England Lions and the Under-19s.

Flintoff, who works with England on a consultancy basis and was among the touring party at the recent T20 World Cup in the Caribbean, has not yet been ruled out of becoming Matthew Mott’s long-term successor.

But it is understood he wants to spend more time in September watching Rocky forge his career with Lancashire. He also wants to develop his coaching qualifications.

Marcus Trescothick has already been appointed on an interim basis for the eight games against Australia, allowing him to work more closely with his former Somerset team-mate – now England captain – Jos Buttler.

The ECB declined to comment on a report suggesting Buttler had failed to gel with Flintoff during the World Cup.
