Andy Lee reveals his very romantic gesture to Rebecca Harding during their engagement… and why it took him 10 years to pop the question: ‘I didn’t realise how important it was’

Andy Lee has shared new details about his romantic engagement to longtime girlfriend Rebecca Harding.

The couple announced their engagement on May 1 after ten years together.

Speaking to The Fox’s Fifi, Fev & Nick on Thursday, the comedian, 42, revealed he personally designed Bec’s engagement ring, explaining that he hadn’t realised what a huge decision it would be.

‘I thought I had an idea, but I didn’t realise how important the ring is,’ he said.

Andy also opened up about the long-awaited proposal, which had been the subject of engagement rumours and speculation for years.

‘Well, I’d waited for 10 years for Bec to propose – and I thought, “Bloody hell… I’m just going to have to do it”,’ he joked.

‘The hard thing is most people went, “About bloody time”,’ there was no congratulations, just yelling and (asking) why didn’t you do it earlier,’ he admitted.

Andy got down on one knee at the couples $5million decrepit Melbourne mansion and proposed with a napkin – which symbolised how they met in 2014.

‘When I first met Bec, in a café, she was a waitress, and she was busy and I wrote on a napkin,’ Andy recounted.

‘I left my email address (on the napkin), which she didn’t like, but I just said, ‘If you have a boyfriend, just tell him that I’m using you to get to him. I bet he’s handsome’,’ he continued.

Lee returned to the same café the next morning and wrote another message on the napkin.

‘I’d actually gone back to the same café, gotten the same napkin again, and I had written, ‘If you’ve got a husband, just tell him that I’m using you to get to him. I bet he’s handsome,’ he said.

‘And I proposed with the napkin, which she loved.’

The comedian revealed the exciting news on an episode of his Hamish and Andy podcast on May 1.

Speaking with his podcast co-host Hamish Blake, Andy shared intimate details of his proposal, before inviting his fiancée on the show.

‘I asked Bec to marry me on Sunday,’ Andy announced.

Hamish said he was overjoyed and that he and his wife Zoe Foster Blake were both ‘crying’ with happiness over the news.

‘Is it a bit quick? That’s all I wanna ask,’ he also joked.

Rebecca, 33, also shared an update to her Instagram account while showing off the stunning diamond engagement ring.

‘People keep saying we’ve rushed into this but we don’t care what people say!’ she captioned her post.

Rebecca and Andy went public with their relationship at the 2015 Australian Open.

In 2022, the couple confirmed they had briefly split for six months in 2016 after Rebecca felt ‘immense pressure’ dating someone in the public eye.

However, they soon realised they were meant to be during their time apart.

Andy and Rebecca are currently undertaking a $5million renovation project after buying a historic mansion in Melbourne’s east.
