Anfield Liverpool mother with cancer distraught at dirty broken rented flat

A mother recently diagnosed with cancer has been left distraught by the ‘nightmare’ conditions of her rented home.

Catherine Davies, of Anfield in Liverpool, was told she had cancer of the womb 12 weeks ago and is still coming to terms with giving birth to a still born baby earlier this year.

She broke down in tears as she described the squalid conditions of her rented first floor property.

Ms Davies claims it is damp, with vermin, exposed wiring, bad smells and crumbling walls.

She said: ‘I am just fed up with the damp and the horrible smell. I used to worry that the place was a fire hazard due all the exposed wiring.

‘I contacted the fire service and they have been around.

‘They were very helpful and fitted a working smoke alarm, which gives us some peace of mind.

‘And we have mice running around – I think they are coming in through a hole in the wall.

‘At least they are not rats. I have contacted the council and they have sent environmental health out. But its all so stressful. This is a nightmare.’

Her landlord claims several repairs have already been made to the property and they have not heard from her since the beginning of June.

They said: ‘We have made made several repairs to this property.

‘I sent an electrician to the house. The tenant has not contacted me recently.

‘My last contact with her was July 2, 2018. I am happy to make repairs in the future.’

Ms Davies, who lives with her husband, is being treated at Liverpool Women’s hospital for cancer of the womb after a diagnosis 12 weeks ago. Her baby was still born in May.

Liverpool City council recently carried out a day of action in the Anfield area to try and raise standards in the private rented sector.

A council spokesman said: ‘An Environmental Health Officer has visited the property and identified some repairs that the landlord needs to undertake.

‘We have tried to make a follow up visit without success, and will be arranging to meet the landlord to see if he has complied with the work that is needed.’
