Now the hard work begins! Ange Postecoglou promises ‘entertaining and winning football’ on first day as new Tottenham boss

  • Ange Postecoglou has begun his first day as Tottenham manager
  • The Australian has been tasked with transforming the club
  • He has promised to bring entertaining and winning football

Ange Postecoglou has delivered a promise to Tottenham fans as he begun his first day in his new job with the north London club.

Postecoglou, 57, was named Antonio Conte’s successor last month and has been tasked with taking Spurs up the Premier League table after a lowly eighth place finish last term.

Despite landing big name managers in Conte and Jose Mourinho in the past, Tottenham fans have endured largely negative football, with the masses crying out for an aggressive style of play to get them off their seats.

And Postecoglou, who delighted with his positive brand of football with Celtic, has vowed to excite fans once more in north London as he arrived at the club’s training base to begin pre-season.

‘I love to win, mate, that’s the main thing. I have done that wherever I have been. So, the football is designed to bring success,’ he said.

‘Alongside that, it’s really important to me that there is an element of something most fans and most players want to be associated with. It’s football that is exciting, that people talk about.

‘It’s not just the end result but the manner in which you play your football and that is really important to me because I think it’s a way of being successful and secondly it allows people to grab onto those things that are most special about our game.

‘It’s what I try to provide. You never get it right in all aspects but the basis of it will be we want to be a team that wins things but ultimately also entertain the fans.

‘We’ve got six weeks to prepare these guys so come first weekend of Premier League football, we’re ready to go,’ he said.

Postecoglou has already bolstered his squad with the signings of James Maddison for $45million from Leicester and Italian goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, as well as making Dejan Kulusevski’s loan deal permanent from Juventus.

Maddison revealed he was left stunned by Postecoglou during a phone call with the 57-year-old, and equally, the Australian said he was blown away by Maddison and Vicario’s personalities and believes they have the right character to carry out his ideology.

‘It’s not just about the talent that they bring as footballers but what they bring as people as well, because we are going to play football that requires a certain kind of personality and character,’ he added.

‘Both of those guys have got it in abundance. I could hear it in their voices when I spoke to them, I knew that they were the right types to bring into the dressing room.’

Postecoglou has a big job ahead of him with Harry Kane’s future in doubt, while their rivals are also strengthening.
