Anita Birges, who heads Mise en Place Professional Organising, used uncooked rice, dishwashing liquid and warm water to make her dirty bottle look like new again.

The Sydney mum shared the ‘super simple’ back-to-school hack on the Today Show and in a video posted to Instagram saying the trick also works for vases.

‘Have you checked the kids drink bottles before sending them back to school next week?’ she wrote in the clip’s caption.

‘Make sure you do, because you might find some nasty, mouldy surprises in there.’

Anita put a third of a cup of uncooked rice into the bottle saying the amount of rice may vary depending on the size of the container.

She then adds a few drops of dishwashing liquid and fills the bottle up half way with warm water.

Anita then closes the lid and gives the bottle a good shake before draining contents out.

‘I drain the contents through a strainer so the rice doesn’t go down the sink. TIP, you can reuse the same rice for all the drink bottles!’ she said.

‘EXTRA TIP, this cleaning hack works great with vases as well.’

Viewers were wowed by the handy tip and some shared their own water bottle cleaning methods.

‘Ummm this is amazing!’ one woman wrote.

‘I use a bottle brush….they were invented to clean all types of bottles,’ said a second.

‘You can also add vinegar or silica for lemon, add boiling water, keep it standing for 30 minutes, rinse out – gone!’ a third suggested.

‘What about the smell? All our clean water bottles have an awful smell,’ one mum asked to which Anita replied: ‘Try shaking with baking soda after’.
