At the event, Kendrick spoke about working on the film after taking a one year hiatus during the pandemic to focus on her mental health.

‘This was a really personal project to me, so I was very grateful to be involved in the edit more than I’d been involved in any other film,’ she said.

‘One thing that became very important to me as we were editing [was] something that Wunmi [Mosaku] — who plays Sophie — said to me the first day we met,’ she said.

‘We were talking about the movie and she was talking about how she was so excited to see my performance — which is such a generous thing to say — and we were talking about the script,’ she continued.

‘And I was like, “Oh, I love that how it sticks with this character rather than taking the easy way out and cataloging a bunch of evidence of the bad behavior”,’ she said. ‘Ands she said, “But Anna, you’re the evidence.”‘

‘That was a really powerful thing to hear,’ Kendrick added. ‘She was talking about the performance, but that’s my work in recovery now to trust my own perceptions and my own experience.’

‘[This film] is important to me personally, because it felt like a validation of the idea that we can take the impact that something has had on a person as evidence.’

In September, Kendrick revealed she suffered psychological abuse from a boyfriend which she carried into playing Alice — a woman going through a similar situation.

It was months after the split in late 2021 when she filmed the movie.

She said: ‘I was in a situation where I loved and trusted this person more than I trusted myself.’

The star added, ‘So when that person is telling you that you have a distorted sense of reality and that you are impossible and that all the stuff that you think is going on is not going on, your life gets really confusing really quickly.

‘At the end, I had the unique experience of finding out that everything I thought was going on was in fact going on,’ she said. ‘So I had this kind of springboard for feeling and recovery that a lot of people don’t get.
