That same day, the US Vogue editor-in-chief didn’t mince her words in a fiery keynote address at the Australian Open Inspirational Series brunch, when she spoke about LGBTQ rights.

A vocal supporter for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, Anna slammed Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and 24-time tennis grand slam winner Margaret Court over their conservative views about gay marriage.

Anna described Mr Morrison’s record on the divisive topic as ‘backwards in all senses’ and called for Margaret Court Arena at Melbourne Park to be renamed.

‘Not everyone in power in Australia today seems to admire the country’s leadership role,’ Anna told attendees.

‘Like many of you, I have been alarmed by your Prime Minister’s record on LBTGQ rights, which seems backward in all senses that no one can be expelled from school for their orientation should not require clarification.

‘A government should protect its people and not make it unclear whether they will be accepted.’

She then took a swipe at Margaret, saying intolerance has no place in tennis.

‘It is inconsistent for the sport for Margaret Court’s name to be on the stadium that does so much to bring all people together across their differences,’ she said.

As a tennis player herself — she regularly gets up early to play before work — Anna also frequently pops up at other tournaments.

In her 73 Questions video for Vogue in 2014, she gave shout-outs to her two favourite players, saying her dream women’s doubles partner would be Serena Williams, and her dream mixed doubles partner would be Roger Federer.
