Anna Wintour took advantage of her time away in Australia to shake up her signature style and experiment with a new look by trading her much-loved Manolo Blahnik heels for a pair of casual espadrilles.
The 69-year-old Vogue boss, who has been wearing the same nude Manolo Blahnik heels for 20 years, was seen wearing two ensembles at the Australian Open on Thursday – as well as two pairs of shoes, the second, and much more casual of which she put on in order to step onto the court to receive an honor.
Wintour started off her tennis-packed day at the Rod Laver Arena wearing a white dress with a red floral motif to watch Japan’s Naomi Osaka best the Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova.
Tennis lover: Anna Wintour enjoyed matches at the Australian Open again on Thursday, taking in one with Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban
Dressed up: She kicked off the day with the AO Inspirational Series Brunch, where she was seen wearing her signature Monolo Blahnik heels
Say cheese! She wore a white dress with a red and green floral pattern and chatted with Baz Luhrmann
Special: Wintour was the keynote speaker and one of several women being honored
Then after a quick break — during which she changed into a bold white and yellow number — she was back to see Spain’s Rafael Nadal beat Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Wintour certainly didn’t pack light for the trip, though one could hardly blame the most famous fashion editor in the world for traveling with an extensive wardrobe.
Whereas the tennis pros stick to the same uniform for each match, Wintour has had a different ensemble ready every time the photographers have snapped her picture.
On Thursday, she kicked things off in an ankle-length white sheath dress with a delicate red floral design, pairing it with her signature sunglasses, a beaded necklace, and nude Manolo Blahnik sandals.
Before Osaka’s match against Pliskova, it was all about the Vogue boss herself: Wintour was honored in an on-court ceremony as part of a program designed to recognize women’s achievements.
In November, it was announced that she would headline the AO Inspirational Series.
Good for her! She was honored on court in a ceremony between matches
Footwear choice: She swapped her Manolo heels for espadrilles to walk on to the court
Fab friends: She laughed with pal Nicole Kidman during the match
Food and fun: She, Nicole, and Keith watched together after the special brunch
They watched Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic play United States’ Danielle Collins first
They then watched Japan’s Naomi Osaka best the Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova
Woohoo! Wintour got quite into the match as she sat beside Baz Luhrmann
‘As a lifelong tennis fan who’s spent years watching the Australian Open on television at odd hours of the day and night in New York and elsewhere, I’m delighted to be headed to Melbourne to see my very first Australian Open up close and in-person,’ she said at the time.
‘And — particularly given the dynamic state of today’s women’s tour — I’m very excited to speak about the transformative impact of women in the game, both on the court and off, in terms of what’s been accomplished as well as what challenges remain.’
So Thursday started with a brunch honoring her and others, in which she was the keynote speaker — and went on to include an on court ceremony in her honor at Melbourne Park.
For that, she swapped her signature Manolos for a pair of flat espadrilles, that were complete with what appeared to be a fun floral pattern on the front – quite a departure from her regular looks.
After being honored on the court, Wintour went up into the stands to watch the match with Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, and Baz Luhrmann.
Outfit change: For the night session, she changed into a white and yellow number
Chillin’: She arrived early and sat in the stands before the semi-final match between Spain’s Rafael Nadal and Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas
Go-tos: As always, she accessorized with a beaded necklace and sunglasses
VIPs: She chatted with Rod Laver in the stands before the match
Loving it: Wintour is a huge tennis fan and plays herself in the morning
She then appears to have left the arena for a break and a quick costume change before coming back for Nadal’s match against Tsitsipas.
For that, she showed up early and sat in the empty stand with Rod Laver himself, chatting before things kicked off.
She wore a colorblocked dress, with a patterned goldenrod down one side and blue and white down the other.
She appeared to be enjoying herself, despite the fact that her two favorites — Roger Federer and Serena Williams — are out.
This is also the third time this week that Wintour has worn two outfits in the same day.
Oops, she did it again! She also wore two outfits on January 23, starting out with this dress for the quarterfinals with Serena Williams and Czech’s Karolina Pliskova
Switching it up: Later, she swapped her look to watch Serbia’s Novak Djokovic match against Japan’s Kei Nishikori for the men’s quarterfinals
Signature look: Both dresses had graphic prints with sleeves hitting just below the elbow
Proud: Wintour previously attended Serena’s match against Romania’s Simona Halep on Jan. 21 in a yellow floral number
Go-to looks: On January 20, she started out in a lilac dress (left) and changed into a blue one later that day (right)
On January 23, Wintour supported Serena, 37, as she went up against Czech’s Karolina Pliskova. For that, she wore a dress with a brown and orange bird pattern, which she accessorized with a necklace and sunglasses.
After the match, Wintour changed into a different dress, this time a cheerful floral number, to see Serbia’s Novak Djokovic go up against Japan’s Kei Nishikori.
And on January 20, she started the day in a lilac graphic print dress before swapping it for a blue and white spotted number that evening.
Her other outfit this week was a yellow floral dress for Serena’s match against Romania’s Simona Halep on Jan. 21.
