‘Anorexia’ hoodie on sale on Amazon sparks fury

An ‘anorexia’ hoodie on sale on Amazon has sparked fury for its ‘offensive’ slogan that ‘trivalises’ eating disorders.

The sweatshirt, which is being sold by a seller on the US site, is printed with the words: ‘[A]norexia (an-uh-rek-see-uh) Like Bulimia, except with self control.’

The top’s slogan has been slammed on social media, with many calling for the hoodie to be pulled from the website.

Some described the hoodie – which is on sale for $24.75 (£18) – as ‘disgraceful’ and ‘inappropriate’, adding that the illnesses were not something that should be joked about.

Kayla Holder wrote on Twitter: ‘This is disgusting. As someone who had suffered from Anorexia, I find this truly offensive.’

Abi Trulove commented: ‘This is disgraceful! #eatingdisorders are illnesses & not to be joked about or trivialised. So inappropriate!’

Meanwhile, Dr Andy Mayers, who is a mental health campaigner, added: ‘Please remove this #anorexia ‘hoody’ item from sale. #eatingdisorders kill. It is not a joking matter.’

The hoodie has also been criticised by the eating disorder charity Beat.

Many called for Amazon to remove the hoodie from the site, saying ‘it is not a joking matter’

They said in a statement: ‘When eating disorders are glamourised or trivialised like in the case of this hoodie, it can trigger negative behaviours in people who are affected by these complex mental health issues, which can cause serious harm.

CONTROVERSY OVER ‘DATE RAPE’ BOOK

The row over the ‘Anorexia’ hoodie is not the first time Amazon has sparked controversy with one of its products.

In 2015, a petition was launched calling for the online retailer to pull books by ‘pick up artist’ Daryush Valizadeh, known as Roosh V.

His Bang series books were described at the time as ‘a thinly veiled guide to getting away with rape.’

In 2014, Amazon removed an eBook called LMR Exposed: How To Overcome Her Last Minute Resistance To Sex following an outcry.

‘We urge the company responsible to stop making this hoodie, and call on all retailers, including Amazon, to refuse to sell it.’

The statement continued: ‘Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses and their causes are complex.

‘Anyone, regardless of their age, sex or cultural background, can develop an eating disorder such as anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder.

‘The stigma surrounding eating disorders prevents many people from seeking help, and trivialising them in this way only makes it harder for individuals to get help.’

The garment is being sold by a third-party seller called ArturoBuch and is not currently available on the Amazon UK site.

Amazon declined to comment when contacted by MailOnline.
