Anthony Albanese meets Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau before Queen’s funeral in London

Despite it only being a few months since they last met Justin Trudeau said he had ‘lots to talk about’ with Anthony Albanese as the two leaders greeted each other in London ahead of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.

Canadian Prime Minister said it was ‘really, really good’ to see the Aussie leader again in person after the pair warmly shook hands ahead of tomorrow sombre event. 

Australia and Canada were united in condemning Russia’s bloody invasion of Ukraine and both vowed deeper economic cooperation as well as change.

The two leaders also spoke about battling climate change. 

But with both countries being mining powerhouses Mr Trudeau said he would talk to Mr Albanese about extracting minerals ‘in a world that Canada and Australia both share a strong expertise in with the kinds of values that matter to consumers’.

They last met one-on-one in June before a NATO summit in the Spanish city of Madrid. 

‘It’s very sombre occasion in which we’re here together in London,’ Mr Albanese said.

‘But in part of the recognition of some of our common history, and our common values that we’ll talk about, are common values of human rights of support for the international rule of law in our region.’

The two leaders said Australia and Canada had much in common as they pledged economic cooperation

Both prime ministers earlier had separate audiences with King Charles.  

Mr Albanese described his one-on-one meeting with King Charles as a ‘great honour’ and ‘a very warm engagement’.

‘I extended my personal condolences to King Charles but also the condolences of the Australian people,’ he said.

‘He’s very conscious of the connection that was there between his mother, Her Majesty, and Australia.

‘But he also has, of course, a close personal connection, spending six months of his schooling in Australia and we had a quite a considerable engagement and discussion.’

Earlier Mr Albanese met with King Charles at Buckingham Palace and passed on the condolences of the Australian people over the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth

Mr Albanese also held informal talks with UK Prime Minister Liz Truss at her residence in Kent, their second face-to-face but the first since her move to Downing Street.

He and partner Jodie Haydon attended the Lying-In-State of Queen Elizabeth at Westminster on Saturday and then went Lancaster House to sign the condolence book and make a statement in memory of Queen Elizabeth.

Mr Albanese has also revealed details of Australia’s national memorial service on Thursday, following his return.

The event will be hosted by television personality Melissa Doyle, with singer Anthony Callea performing.

The day has been declared a public holiday.

Mr Albanese says the Queen’s funeral will be a ‘sombre day’.

It will be televised at 8pm (AEST) on Monday.
