- Referendum will be on enshrining a Voice for First Nations people in Constitution
Anthony Albanese is set to announce the country’s first referendum in 20 years, with Australians expected to be asked if they support enshrining a Voice for First Nations people in the Constitution.
The drafted question is: ‘Do you support an alteration to the constitution that establishes an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice?’
The Prime Minister will on Saturday unveil how the Constitution could be changed at the Garma Festival in the Northern Territory.
The Federal Government will recommend three sentences be added to the Constitution with the first reading: ‘There shall be a body, to be called the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.’

Mr Albanese will tell Indigenous leaders, campaigners and advocates gathered at northeast Arnhem land about the ‘straightforward proposition’.
‘A simple principle,’ he will say. ‘A question from the heart.
‘Enshrining a Voice will be a national achievement. It will be above politics.’
