Anthony Bourdain documentary drops poignant first trailer for Roadrunner

An upcoming documentary about the beautiful and tragic life of Anthony Bourdain just released its first trailer.

Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain takes a deep look into who the chef, writer and provocateur was before his untimely death in 2018 using videos of the star himself interspersed with interviews from those who knew him best.

Bourdain died by suicide at 61-years-old on June 8, 2018 while away in France with his best friend, and world-renowned chef, Eric Ripert.

Hearing Bourdain’s rich voice in the trailer hits like a shock of cold water: ‘You’re probably gonna find out about it anyway, so here’s a little preemptive truth-telling: There’s no happy ending.’ 

The film uses Tony’s own words to carry viewers through a journey of his exceptional yet dark life through old footage.

Oscar winning fimmalker Morgan Neville is behind Roadrunner and aimed to tell the story of the author and food icon through the prism of Bourdain himself along with candid conversations with those who were closest to him in life.

‘It’s not where you go. It’s what you leave behind,’ reads the logline for the film. ‘Chef, writer, adventurer, provocateur: Anthony Bourdain lived his life unabashedly.’

‘Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain is an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at how an anonymous chef became a world-renowned cultural icon.’

Neville will unravel the former Les Halles chef’s rise to fame as well as his home life with 14-year-old daughter Ariane and ex-wife Ottavia Busia-Bourdain.

The film will also look at the sad truth behind the globetrotting food lover’s struggle with his mental health.

‘I know how hard that must have been for him to reach out to someone and be like, ‘Hey man, I’m not doing well,” says David Choe in the trailer.

One particular gut punch for fans comes in a sweet moment of laughter between bourdain and his best friend, world renowned Michelin starred chef Eric Ripert.

‘You inspire so many people with the show, you have good karma,’ Ripert tells him over a picnic table.

‘Good karma?’ Bourdain replies with the tone of surprise. ‘I think so!’ the perpetually positive Ripert says before adding: ‘Well …’ as they both bust out laughing.

Bourdain, a recovering cocaine and heroin addict, hanged himself while staying at the Le Chambard hotel, where he was filming an upcoming episode of his CNN show Parts Unknown.

Paramedics made efforts for revive Bourdain, before he was pronounced dead.

‘Anthony was a dear friend,’ Ripert later told the New York Times. ‘He was an exceptional human being so inspiring and generous. One of the great storytellers of our time who connected with so many. I wish him peace. My love and prayers are with his family, friends and loved ones.’

Bourdain rose to fame with his gritty best-selling memoir Kitchen Confidential, and became a household name on TV.

The travel host and author was also very open about his past struggles with addiction to heroin and cocaine.        

‘You get scarred, marked, changed in the process’ Bourdain poignantly says of travel and no doubt viewers will feel the same after watching the emotional film.
