Anthony Joshua’s rematch against Oleksandr Usyk is likely to take place in March, reveals Eddie Hearn with the UK a front runner to stage the fight… but confirms AJ HASN’T split with trainer Rob McCracken

  • Eddie Hearn says March is the realistic date for the Joshua vs Usyk rematch
  • Joshua picked up his second career loss against the Ukrainian last month
  • UK could host the fight yet again after rumours suggested it could be in Ukraine
  • Hearn also confirmed Joshua has not split from long-time trainer Rob McCracken

Eddie Hearn has revealed that the rematch between Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr is ‘realistic’ for March 2022 and that the UK could host the fight again.

Joshua picked up his second career loss against the dangerous Ukrainian last month and therefore surrendered the unified WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight titles – having held them since he beat Andy Ruiz in December 2019.

The 32-year-old swiftly triggered the rematch clause and could get his revenge as early as March 2022 with promoter Hearn revealing the UK is leading the race to host the rematch.

Rumours suggested that the rematch could be held in Usyk’s native country Ukraine but Hearn wants it back in the UK again.

He told iFL TV: ‘I think March is realistic, yeah March, around March.’

When asked if the UK is the frontrunner to host it again: Hearn replied: ‘I think so yeah, I’d like to do it back in the UK.

‘Like I say, we’ve had approaches, offers, it’s a huge fight and there will be a lot of people wanting to stage it.

‘But I would like to do it back in the UK.’

Hearn also confirmed Joshua has not split from long-time trainer Rob Mcracken despite being spotted in gyms in the United States.

McCracken – who guided the Brit to a gold medal in the 2012 Olympics – has come under pressure from fans around the world after Joshua’s poor performance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Joshua was pictured with prolific coach Robert Garcia leading to rumours of a split but Hearn confirmed that’s not the case as of yet.

He said: ‘He (Joshua) went to see a numbers of gyms, fighters and trainers. He hasn’t split from Rob McCracken, hasn’t decided he’s gonna join another trainer – he’s just trying to learn. There’s absolutely no definitive mindset or answer.’
