  • He was the subject of a despicable verbal assault by Roma’s Jose Mourinho

Anthony Taylor was at the Ataturk Stadium – as a guest of UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.

In a huge vote of confidence the English official, subject of a despicable verbal assault by Jose Mourinho after overseeing a Europa League Final in which the Portuguese’s Roma lost to Sevilla on penalties, was in the VIP section for City’s treble triumph.

Taylor, who was attacked by Roma supporters as he tried to leave the airport following Mourinho’s outburst, may well have been on the pitch had an English side not made the showpiece fixture.

The official is widely renowned as one of the best in the world, and is clearly highly rated within the footballing world.

As a guest of Ceferin, there’s no doubt that Taylor has been given a huge vote of confidence as he looks to put the past behind him following an attack from AS Roma fans after the Europa League Final.

Roma fans have since unveiled a banner to show their displeasure towards Taylor, calling the official a ‘f****** disgrace’, the words that Mourinho himself used.

Many people across the footballing world have jumped to the support of Taylor, with the Premier League condemning the ‘unacceptable abuse’ directed towards their official.

Elsewhere, a CEO of a refereeing charity has blamed Mourinho for the abuse he has received.

Roma boss Mourinho was charged by UEFA for confronting Taylor in the car park after the match and will learn of a potential ban soon.

UEFA have come to the support of Taylor, however, with the referee in attendance at the Champions League final as Man City beat Inter Milan to lift the trophy.
