Antonio Conte unable to blood Ross Barkley in FA Cup clash

  • Ross Barkley signed for Chelsea on the eve of original FA Cup tie at Carrow Road
  • Deal went through after midday deadline meaning he cannot play on Wednesday
  • Antonio Conte to schedule friendly behind closed doors to assess Barkley fitness
  • Chelsea boss will give opportunity to 17-year-old Ethan Ampadu against Norwich

Antonio Conte’s plans to blood Ross Barkley in the FA Cup replay against Norwich have been foiled because they did not complete his transfer in time.

Conte said last week he hoped the £15million England international would make his Chelsea debut in the third round replay at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

The transfer from Everton was completed on the eve of the original tie at Carrow Road but, it transpires, not before the midday deadline.

Antonio Conte said Ross Barkley’s deal concluded too late for him to play on Wednesday

The deadline is at 5pm for a loan signing but at noon for a permanent deal.

‘He’s not able to play because the transfer was late,’ said Conte.

Chelsea are planning to organise a practice match behind closed doors in order to give Barkley some game time.

The England international has not played this season since a hamstring injury in pre-season.

‘We are preparing a friendly game for him during this week,’ said Conte. ‘Then we will see his physical condition but I am very happy for his commitment.

‘He could be ready for the next game, or for the next game.’

Chelsea will be without Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas, both nursing minor injuries and not available against Norwich.

But there will be another opportunity for 17-year-old Ethan Ampadu.

‘First of all, I think young players have to deserve this chance,’ said Conte. ‘Not only because these players are from the academies.

‘I want to be clear: for this reason, Ampadu has deserved to have the chance.

‘Probably Ampadu will play because he has showed he deserves this chance, he has kept his level.

‘This is a good opportunity (for him). But young players have to deserve this opportunity and to show me that, when I give them this opportunity, I didn’t make a mistake.’
