The first question Anya was asked by the publication read: ‘You have those beautiful eyes and they’re so far apart.

‘When you were a kid, did they make you self conscious?’

And, in response, Anya laid bare her insecurities about her features.

She said: ‘I can definitely remember when Facebook was a thing and I was never aware that my eyes were far apart and then someone tagged me in a picture with a fish and they were like, “This is you ’cause your eyes are like here.”

‘I was really upset about it and I didn’t enjoy it.’

The Queen’s Gambit star added that she had been unable to look at herself in the mirror for a ‘very long time’ afterwards.

Anya continued: ‘I still don’t really spend a lot of time in front of mirrors because I don’t really have to deal with my face. Unfortunately, y’all do.’

Thankfully, however, she also told the interviewer that she had been ‘growing into’ herself and learning to become ‘a bit less awkward.’

The interview resurfaced on social media this weekend, which caused furious fans to rush to the actress’ defense.

One wrote: ‘I see this narrative being created that Anya Taylor-Joy is somehow an “unconventional” or “irregular” kind of attractive, which really deals a blow to society’s already unrealistic beauty standards.’

Another added: ‘This is heartbreaking. It’s simply because she looks ethereal, and not like the cookie cutter influencer/Kardashian image that’s absolutely friggen everywhere.

‘Anytime I see her on screen, I’m just hypnotized and captivated by her beauty. She is my #1 girl crush til the day I die.’

And a third said: ‘She’s literally one of the most beautiful ever! It’s so sad that some ugly miserable losers on the internet can ruin someone’s self-esteem like that.’
