AOC blasts the GOP and says its MAGA plan is actually ‘Un-American’

Firebrand Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has slammed the GOP and said that turning away asylum-seekers is ‘unAmerican’.

The politician, 29, attended the funeral of retired NYPD detective and 9/11 hero Luis Alvarez in New York yesterday and later took to Twitter to share her views. 

She said ‘America isn’t America at all without immigrants’ and shared her four alternative ideas for immigration policy. 

Ocasio-Cortez, known as AOC, has previously been criticized for referring to detention centers in the US as concentration camps.  

Taking to Twitter, she wrote: ‘The GOP’s grand plan to ”Make America Great Again” is to hurt children, immigrants, refugees into thinking America isn’t great – that it’s cruel & inhumane – so people don’t come at all. 

‘But America isn’t America at all without immigrants. To turn them away is Un-American.’

She followed up the tweet with a thread on policy approaches she believes the US should consider. 

AOC wrote: ‘1. Foreign policy: Reinstate US humanitarian aid in the Northern Triangle, where people are fleeing. US should start acting like a real partner in Latin America and increase visas where we intervene.

‘2. Climate change: There is broad consensus from military to activists that resource strains (droughts, famine, etc) & natural disasters are drivers of refugees. People are fleeing places that were once livable &are no longer. It will get worse the longer we do nothing.

‘3. Border policy: As @JulianCastro mentioned in the #DemDebate, it’s time to repeal Section 1325 & 1326, the statutes this admin is using to mindlessly throw people in cages. We have to take these proceedings out of criminal code & into civil code. Torture accomplishes nothing.

She took to Twitter to double down on her thoughts on immigration after attending the funeral

‘4. Econ: We need large-scale public investment to spur job creation for citizens and immigrants alike. Ideally that investment transitions us to a sustainable economy (climate & income-wise). We are overdue to rebuild American infrastructure and it’s going to take ALL of us & immigrants to do it.’

She made the comments on social media after appearing at the funeral of hero NYPD detective Luis Alvarez. 

Alvarez died Saturday in a hospice center in Rockville Centre, New York, after a three-year battle with colorectal cancer. 

He attributed his illness to the three months he spent digging through rubble at the World Trade Center’s twin towers after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Alvarez fought until his final days for the extension of the September 11 Victim Compensation Fund.
