Apple’s Siri hits back with information about Black Lives Matter when users say ‘All Lives Matter’

Apple’s Siri is supporting the Black Lives Matter movement by providing users who say ‘All Lives Matter’ with a link to learn more about human rights crusade.

When speaking the phrase to Siri, it will respond, ‘All Lives Matter’ is often used in response to phrase ‘Black Lives Matter,’ but it does not represent the same concerns,’ and then the technology prompts users to visit BlackLivesMatter.com.

The update is to align with other businesses and organizations that are showing solidarity for the movement with worldwide protests following the death of George Floyd who was killed while in police custody last month.

Apple also joins Amazon and Google, which have also updated their smart voice assistance to explain the Black Lives Matter movement to users.

Floyd was killed on May 25 in Minneapolis, Minnesota when Officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck until he lost consciousness – autopsies have since deemed the death a homicide.

Over the past few weeks, thousands of Americans and people around the world have protested his death, along with advocating for the end of police brutality.

On Thursday, Apple launched a racial justice initiative aimed at breaking down barriers to opportunity for minorities that will include doing more business with black-owned suppliers and increasing minority representation at tech firms.

‘Whether it is at Apple or anywhere in society, the burden of change must not fall on those who are underrepresented,’ Cook said in a video posted on Twitter.

‘It falls heaviest on those in positions of power, leadership and influence to change structures for the greater good.’

And it seems Siri is part of the tech giant’s initiative.

Amazon and Google have also training their digital assistance to respond to statements and questions about the movement.

Sports blogger David Gardner tweeted a video of himself asking his Google Home smart speaker: ‘Do Black lives matter?’ 

The digital assistant responded, ‘Black Lives Matter. Black people deserve the same freedoms afforded to everyone in this country, and recognizing the injustice they face is the first step towards fixing it.’

And when asked, ‘do all lives matter,’ Google Home says: ‘Saying ‘Black Lives Matter’ doesn’t mean that all lives don’t. It means Black lives are at risk in ways others are not.’

CBC radio host Piya Chattopadhyay tested Amazon’s Alexa, which seems to provide a more personal opinion when a user asks ‘do black lives matter?’

It response, ‘Black Lives Matter. I think people deserve to be treated with fairness, dignity and respect.’

Earlier this month, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos expressed his support for Black Lives Matter, by sharing a customer email as well as his response on Instagram on Friday, explaining why Amazon’s website had added a banner reading ‘Black Lives Matter.’

The irate customer wrote: ‘I am for everyone voicing their opinions and standing up for what you believe in, but for your company to blast this on your website is very offensive to me… ALL LIVES MATTER!’

Bezos responded: ‘I have to disagree with you. ‘Black lives matter’ doesn’t mean other lives don’t matter.’

Black lives matter speaks to racism and the disproportionate risk that Black people face in our law enforcement and justice system,’ Bezos continued.

‘I have a 20-year-old son, and I simply don’t worry that he might be choked to death while being detained one day. It’s not something I worry about. Black parents can’t say the same.’

Bezos added that he didn’t intend to minimize worries anyone else has in their life.

‘But I want you to know I support this movement that we see happening around us, and my stance won’t change,’ he concluded.
