Stars in eye-watering fabrics, translucent plastic and festive-inspired ensembles more ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’ than ‘Nutcracker Suite’ have blazed a trail of fashion failure at the ARIA Awards.

Even the most stylish singers got it wrong, with star of the moment Tones and I shamelessly self-promoting in a coat emblazoned with the title of her latest hit, and songstress Alli Simpson missing the tone of the evening in a casual ensemble more suitable for Sunday lunch than the biggest night in the Australian music calendar.

Stars of the small screen also had their fair share of flops, with TV presenter Liv Phyland apparently celebrating the festive season one month early in a red velvet gown belted with a giant ruby ribbon and E! Australia host Ksenija Lukich baring her entire feet in sweat-inducing plastic heels.

DJ Havana Brown put on an eye-popping display in a risque black dress which left little to the imagination, while singer-songwriter Guy Sebastian looked downright uncomfortable in a double-breasted sleeveless suit and gleaming patent brogues.

Superstar Dua Lipa was white hot in an ivory mini-dress, but her choice of polka dot stockings and chunky platform heels ruined what could have been a best-dressed look.

Singer Guy Sebastian flaunted his heavily tattooed arms in a sleeveless double-breasted suit and gleaming patent brogues on the red carpet, while Married At First Sight’s Martha Kalifatidis was a sight for sore eyes in a orange-and-pink tie dye midi-dress.

The reality star debuted a new chopped hairstyle, changing things up from her signature lengthy waves, finishing the head-scratching look with a questionable pair of faded blue mules and a basic black shoulder bag.

E! Australia host Ksenija Lukich suffered a rare fashion fail in a bizarre black mini-dress overlaid with sequined mesh across the front.

Her punk rock-inspired makeup and tiny silver clutch certainly grabbed attention, but all eyes were firmly on her see-through plastic footwear which bared her entire feet and gothic black pedicure.

Ksenija’s fellow TV presenter Liv Phyland was festive in an off-the-shoulder red velvet gown and silver-and-perspex point toe stilettos, but the oversized ruby bow fastened to her waist took the ‘Christmas present’ inspiration a little too literally.

Brisbane pop duo The Veronicas donned matching red and black prom dresses, echoing Dua’s choice of sheer stockings and towering stacked heels.

Fellow Gold Coast singer Lily Papas (pictured) attempted a 'modern ballerina' look with a gold leotard, sheer tulle skirt and lace-up black stilettos, but the end result was more 'Nightmare Before Christmas' than 'Nutcracker Suite'
