Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen channeled Randy Johnson with a deadly pitch before the game against the Oakland Athletics Wednesday. 

Gallen was warming up for the final matchup of the teams’ three-game series when he killed a bird with an unfortunate toss.  

While warming up in the outfield, Gallen threw a curveball that hit a bird in midflight, apparently killing the animal.

The throw was captured by cameras for Diamondbacks’ broadcaster Bally Sports Arizona.

The footage shows Gallen throw the pitch before it inadvertently struck the bird that was flying in front of the catcher.

In the clip, the bird immediately crumples to the ground and according to Bally Sports it did not survive. 

Johnson infamously killed a bird during a spring training game in 2001. While throwing a pitch against the San Francisco Giants, a bird crossed in front of home plate and was destroyed by the baseball.

Johnson won his third Cy Young Award in the National League during that 2001 season, posting a 2.32 ERA over 249.2 innings.

Gallen’s incident happened one day before the anniversary of Johnson pitching a perfect game for Arizona against the Atlanta Braves in 2004.

Gallen his having a great start to the 2023 season, owning a 2.35 ERA over 57.1 innings with 70 strikeouts to eight walks.

Despite a deadly start to the game, the Diamondbacks went on to win the series decider. 

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. led off the ninth with a double and scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Jose Herrera to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a 5-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday for their fifth win in six games.

Christian Walker and Corbin Carroll homered as Arizona took two of three from Oakland in the series despite the bullpen giving up another late lead.

Gurriel led off the ninth with a double off Shintaro Fujinami (1-5) for his seventh straight game with an extra-base hit. Two walks loaded the bases before Herrera’s drive to right off Adrian Martinez allowed Gurriel to score easily.

Ketel Marte added an RBI single.

Jose Ruiz (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth for the win. Miguel Castro pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.

The A’s have lost all eight home series this season.
