Arne Slot gave a sharp response when asked for an update on Liverpool’s move for Jeremie Frimpong.

The Bayer Leverkusen right wing-back has agreed a five-year deal with the Reds but they still need to activate his £29.5million release clause and announce the completion of his medical.

He will replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was left on the bench for Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat at Brighton on Monday night and looked forlorn at full time – even though fans partied in the away end.

Conor Bradley has started the last two games and will stay at the club to battle for his place with Frimpong after signing a contract extension until 2029.

Slot was asked after the loss if Frimpong had undergone a medical, replying: ‘What do you think?

‘I think what we all know is the moment we announce it, that is the moment to talk about it in general. We haven’t announced anything so no need to talk about anyone.’

Frimpong is an incredibly exciting attacking wing-back. Over the last three seasons, he has scored 28 goals and assisted 35 – the sort of numbers you’d expect from an attacking midfielder.

He was an instrumental part of Leverkusen’s unbeaten domestic double under Xabi Alonso last season and has been a consistent player in European competition.

The forward-thinking star will have big boots to fill when Alexander-Arnold leaves at the end of his contract, with his destination expected to be Real Madrid.

Frimpong and Slot know each other well and the 24-year-old is eager to link up with his Dutch international team-mates in Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch.

A product of the Manchester City academy, Frimpong moved to Celtic in 2019, where he quickly became a fan favourite and won a domestic treble in his first season.

He joined Leverkusen in January 2021 and has since developed into one of Europe’s most dynamic right-sided defenders.

Frimpong has earned 12 senior caps for the Netherlands.

Liverpool also remain keen on Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez and a centre-back after missing out on his club mate Dean Huijsen, who is joining Real Madrid for £50m.

Kerkez could cost in the region of £45m and his arrival will provoke questions about the futures of Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas.
